Discovering the Hidden Valleys: Travelling Beyond the Slopes
I started Swisskisafari because of my experiences of true European skiing — in the hidden valleys and the barely known villages. It was the travelling by ski or snowboard between resorts that I found so exciting. It was more challenging, more exposed — you were alone in the wilderness of the Alps, surrounded by their beauty and far from the crowds.
Â
I began to wonder why more people weren’t doing this. I now understand it’s not easy. It’s logistically complicated, and you need a deep knowledge of the mountains and their risks. But once those hurdles are overcome, the rewards are magical — and absolutely worth it.
Â
These experiences are everywhere. There is so much terrain connecting the Alpine countries — particularly Switzerland, Italy and France. They share borders, cultures and mountain passes that make crossing from one to another by ski a joy in itself. Add to that the changing languages, cuisines, wines and scenery, and it becomes a journey that’s as rich culturally as it is physically.
Â
Because really, it’s more than just skiing. It’s a cultural adventure — using skiing, snowboarding or ski touring as the vehicle. You get great exercise, you’re out in nature, moving from place to place under your own steam — and that’s deeply satisfying. Combine this with beautiful hotels, wonderful restaurants and the right local experts, and you have an experience that’s both grounding and unforgettable.
Â
Skiing within the boundaries of a resort is fun, but the excitement truly begins when you go beyond them. That’s what skiing beyond the resorts is all about — freedom, discovery and immersion. This kind of trip isn’t possible everywhere, but the European Alps are perfect for it. There’s a mountain culture here that’s existed for centuries — and when you travel beyond the slopes, you start to feel that history.
Â
You’re not just following modern ski routes; you’re tracing the paths of people who have lived and worked in these valleys for generations. You see how challenging life once was in the mountains — and still is, in many ways. There are still Alpine villages where traditions endure, and locals are proud to share them.
Â
In our modern lives, we’re so often protected from the elements that we forget what it’s like to truly be in nature. On a ski safari, you taste that again. You feel the cold air, the vastness, the power of the landscape — and at the end of the day, when you arrive at a warm hotel in a tiny village, you feel alive in a way that’s hard to describe.
Â
Skiing beyond the resorts is not just an adventure — it’s a reconnection. It wakes you up to nature, to culture, and to the rhythm of the mountains themselves.
