Holistic interior design rooted in nature
Anna Trzebinski – Interior Designer – Spaces with Soul
What value shines through in your work?
I create in a very holistic way. The luxury of living and experiencing life in beautiful spaces comes from first paying attention to the landscape: the seasons, the direction of the sun and winds, the weather and the flow of water. Buildings and dwellings must be placed in context with nature first and foremost. From there, I think about why I am in this space — to view a mountain or the sea, to immerse in sounds, to live, bathe, read, unwind, sleep, or eat. I like harmony, to nestle into the surroundings and create a space that provides the perfect way to enjoy nature. It is always a whole: construction, landscaping, interiors, energy, history and culture. I often spend time alone in places, even sleeping in a tent, just to feel the place before I begin.
How did your story as a designer begin?
Growing up and living in Kenya during the 60s, 70s and 80s, the only way to get what you needed was to import things or make them yourself. When Tonio and I started building our home as a young couple in our twenties, with almost no money, we had to be inventive. We designed and built our home, decorated it, and literally made everything we needed. We collected parts of shipwrecks, used discarded wood from scaffolding, salvaged mahogany planks eaten by white ants, even polished bones to use in frames. From day one it was our way of life. We spent a lot of time in nature and were exceptionally in tune with the environment, creatures, flora and fauna. The goal was never to interfere, but to create safe, beautiful spaces in extraordinary places. This is the root of where my design stems from.
What do you create?
When designing interiors, I first think of the space and its purpose — who will be in it, and for what reason. From there, I curate pieces that work together and bring the story of that space to life. I use rich layers, textures and colours to create a story, always with comfort in mind. Feeling at ease and supremely comfortable is paramount. I love living spaces that invite us in rather than ones we have to live up to. The result should be a feeling of home, a homecoming.
What do you love most about your work?
I love what happens to people who visit the spaces I create. Sharing something I care deeply about gives people access to a place inside themselves, and the interiors truly transport them to another world. My design is a journey, a form of travel in itself. I think I am very good at curating spaces, at finding the best use of a room and arranging it so it feels incredible. It is, in the end, a very energetic thing.
