Turning Wonder into Stewardship

“We protect what we love.”

It is a simple belief, but it sits at the very heart of everything we do.

For more than 25 years, the Western Indian Ocean has been our home, our teacher and our inspiration. Through Seas4Life Safaris, we have guided travellers into this remarkable blue wilderness, helping spark a deep connection with the sea.

But connection is only the beginning. To truly safeguard the future of our oceans, that wonder must grow into understanding, and that understanding must be accessible to everyone — especially the communities who live at the water’s edge.

That is why, in 2025, we officially re-ignited the Seas4Life Foundation. By bringing together marine specialists, researchers, educators and the public, we are creating a model where education, tourism and conservation work in synergy, helping make ocean literacy education part of everyday life.

From Wonder to Understanding

The ocean defines the identity, climate and future of Kenya’s coastline. Yet many children growing up beside the Western Indian Ocean have little opportunity to safely swim in it, let alone understand the extraordinary ecosystems beneath its surface.

The Foundation exists to help bridge that gap.

Using UNESCO’s Ocean Literacy Framework as our starting point, we translate global principles into hands-on learning across Kenya’s six diverse marine ecosystems, from mangrove forests and seagrass meadows to coral reefs. We believe education becomes far more powerful when people can experience these places for themselves.

Our flagship programme, the Discover Ocean Initiative, takes local schoolchildren on that journey. Beginning in the classroom, they progress through beach clean-ups, rockpooling, swimming lessons and guided snorkelling before connecting with local conservation organisations, where curiosity can develop into lifelong stewardship.

A Movement Beyond the Coast

We also believe you don’t need to live beside the sea to care about its future.

Big Blue Day was created to bring ocean literacy education into schools wherever they are. Originally inspired by World Ocean Day, it provides teachers with flexible resources that help students, whether on the Kenyan coast or hundreds of miles inland, understand their connection to the ocean and the role they can play in protecting it.

Already, the Foundation has introduced hundreds of young people to the sea for the very first time while engaging thousands more through schools, community partnerships and educational programmes across Kenya, the wider Western Indian Ocean and the United Kingdom.

Every child who learns to swim, every first snorkel above a coral reef and every conversation that changes the way someone thinks about the ocean becomes part of something much bigger.
