Hand-MADE pottery in Arles

Sophie Lassagne - Ceramicist

Words from YWC founder, Danielle Stynes

“I was lucky to stumble across Sophie on my travels and instantly recognised the quality and finesse of her artwork. Having a bowl of hers in the kitchen is more like having a piece of artwork that you use on your table every day. I was so pleased that she was willing to share her story with us. Sophie does not ship her products around the world so you will just have to call into Arles to pick up one of her pieces in person and enjoy a coffee in the place central and enjoy the views while you are there.”

What is your motto? What inspires you?

What always accompanies me is the search for beauty, perfection and harmony.

Tell us about your background, how did you get started as a ceramicist?

I was born in Paris and raised abroad (Africa & Asia). Forty-eight years ago, while watching a potter working in his studio, I was fascinated by the beauty of the movement. Captivated, I decided to pursue this craft and studied in Paris in the studio  of a talented artist for several years.

How do you describe what you create?

I work with functional objects (because I like things that can be used) and I make my own colours. It’s a real joy to make a bowl, going through all the steps necessary to create it.

What is your favourite thing about what you do?

The wheel throwing, which is the process that involves shaping the clay into pottery by spinning the clay on a potters wheel with your hands is a moment of great calm, concentration, rigour and precision and I find it very soothing for the soul. The search for clean lines and form is still a source of wonder even after all these years.

Now I am lucky enough to be joined by my son Antoine, to whom I have passed on my technique and passion for clay. It is wonderful to share this passion and he brings a whole new energy to the workshop.
