Handcrafted waterproof boots made in Europe

Sandy Wallis - Trailback - Boots with Sole

What is the value that shines through you and your work?

I have come to realise this: when you put your heart and soul into something that you totally believe in, it is absolutely incredible the things that you can achieve with own your resilience and sheer determination.

Please introduce yourself and your product.

I started my company Trailback, seven years ago when we got our dog, Roscoe, a Rhodesian Ridgeback. I was struggling to find footwear that would keep my feet warm and dry on my daily walks. I found wellingtons were too cold and uncomfortable and the lace up waterproof boots just could not cope with those deep muddy puddles. I found an old pair of safety rigger boots in my cupboard at home which were waterproof, so I thought I would try them. They were heavy with the steel safety features, but I got used to that. After wearing them for three years, I thought, these are amazing, I have to make a boot like this but without the weighty safety features.

It was only when the internationally acclaimed Vibram sole experts liked the design of my boots and said yes they wanted to get involved, that it changed everything for me. So I produced my beautiful, handcrafted, fully waterproof rigger style boot which I call the Crofty. I am still only a small brand, but people do like my boots, I even sold a pair to Buckingham Palace!

My boots are all Goodyear welted which is really important to me because it means they can be re-soled and re-used rather than thrown away when the sole wears and the leather will go on for years and years if it is looked after. This is also important to me.

I am very proud that my Trailbacks are European, handcrafted in Spain, with the the award winning German Sympatex waterproof membrane, an Italian Vibram sole and a British brand. The way they’re made means they can be restored when they wear out, they do not need to be thrown away like most boots now. They will go on for years.

What is the process to create your boots, to achieve the final results?

My boots are created for me. I have chosen a manufacturer who has been handcrafting high end, Goodyear welted boots in the same family since 1899. They have made boots for the President of France in the past. My manufacturer produces my boots to my design and I love working with them.

I believe in ethical craftsmanship – this is important to me and my brand.  My Trailbacks are produced in a factory environment where respect, appreciation, and fair compensation are non-negotiable. My view is, you’re not just selecting a boot; you’re supporting a philosophy of craftsmanship, fairness and heritage.

What is your favourite thing about what you do?

I love my Trailbacks. When you look at them you can see how beautifully made they are. They are handcrafted and stitched. We use a shoe making technique that is over 100 years old and still considered one of the best. Each pair of Trailbacks are handled by a skilled artisan therefore our Trailbacks have character and individuality which is really important to me.
